One day when I was working getting the loads out for the day I got a call from one of my wholesalers. He informed me that he had to get rid of 8 pallets (400 bags of 40lb food) of food. The deal he would get me was buy 1 pallet and get one free. Wow what a great deal buy one 40lb premium food and get a 2nd for free!
After the day was done I sat done and pondered what I wanted to do with this food. The food was Premium Edge Lamb/Rice made by Diamond Pet Foods. It was a very premium food that rivaled Nutro, Natures Recipe and many other premium lines.
I liked the food because no one else really sold that line. That meant that if I could get that line moving then the customer would for sure come back to Goober to buy their food. I also knew that the food was very good and dogs would do well on it.
The next week I ran an ad that said if you buy 1 bag you get one free. I immediately started selling a lot of Premium Edge. That was the best deal in the area, and we have a lot of Pet Smarts and Petco's. The 8 pallets 400 bags went out in two weeks. Diamond called me and ask if I would extend the advertising( Goober was growing their brand) and they would let me have another 400 bags at the same deal.
I of course said that would be great! I netted about 150 clients from that deal.
All the other pet stores in the area could have gotten the same deal. They passed I didn't because of the great opportunity to help me get a lot more new clients. People in business tend to stay in one area and never look at other new ones.
That limits you and your business. Always look at deals and see if there is anyway to help grow your business, and maybe have a unique product to sell. This helps you get new clients and they tend to stay with you.

Goober gets a new brother
Having a Dairy Queen for a business can be very demanding. Having that type of business can get you tired and depressed. One of those type of days I decided to look at some red dobermans that I saw in the paper for sale.
When I saw the puppies (6 of them) I immediately fell in love with all of them. They were so little and cute, all of them wanted to stay with their momma.
I had the owner bring them all out so I could look at them. I took my keys out of my pocket and dropped them in middle of all the dogs. All of them scattered except one. I picked him up an cradled him in my arms. He just laid their like a new born baby.
I told the lady I wanted him. I paid her and headed home to show off the new addition to the family. As I drove home I started thinking of what I would name the new family member????
My wife wanted a Harley Davidson motorcycle at the time. I decided I would get her a Harley in the form of a little red doberman. I immediately named him Harley!
Although she never approved of my purchase Harley was a great addition to my family and my life. He was raised by me and turned out to be a very large dog. He weighed over 100 pounds with a perfect straight back that turned heads. He was red from head to toe.
Goober loved Harley and quickly became very close to his new brother. Later in life after Harley died I believe that's when Goober died in spirit. Over the next 10 years Harley and Goober would have many adventures.

The Idea of Goober Pet Company

I was feeding the dogs a pet food that was called shiny coat or something like that. It was made locally and was sold in mainly privately owned pet stores. Pet smart and Petco did not carry it.
My wife at the time had went down to get some of the dog food that worked well with our dogs. The store was out of the food and told her to pay for it and they would deliver it to our door.
I did not know that they where delivering it that day. When the doorbell rang I answered the door and a guy was standing their with the dog food. I ask my wife at the time what this was for. She explained that they had been out and delivered the food to us.
After the delivery guy left I thought to myself wow what a concept! I mean no storefront and with the delivery system our growth would be unlimited. I immediately started working on my concept to make it a real business.
In business you need to watch things everyday and you'll get ideas and opportunities that will come your way! This was a day for me that I paid attention to and opened a successful business!

Goober got going

Goober started growing up so I decided to take him to Petsmart training. He did well during this limited amount training. He really warmed up to the training and did well. 6 weeks later he got his degree
As I started looking how well he was doing I decided to see if their was even more training. I found Phoenix Dog Academy and signed him and Sampson up for the program.
The company sent a trainer directly out to your home. The guys name was Bob. He was a good trainer and quickly started to like Goober. Goober attitude was to learn all he could. He was soooo easy to train. He loved the trainer and loved to learn. Sampson was also being trained and loved it also.
As we were training the Wrigley Gum was looking for a dog for a European commercial. Goober had a picture at the school. Being a doberman/border collie mix they thought he was the perfect dog!
A van and personal trainer picked him up the next day and Goober was off to Hollywood....well TV ad anyway.
He had his own hotel room, van, and trainer! He didn't like it to much and had a rough time. He didn't eat much and wanted to get home.
Being the worried parent that I was I picked him up around midnight at the Waffle House. I decided that Goober would not do anymore long distance ads without me being their with him!

The first day I met Goober

I met this dog on my mom and dads ranch. The neighbor had brought some puppies over to give them away(Goober being one of them). My mom liked one of them and wanted me to train the dog. When I brought him home he immediately showed me how smart he actually was.
One day when I put him on my sofa he rolled around that thing until his little 6 month body fell off the sofa. I immediately called him Goober. What a Goob to fall off the couch. I fell in love with the dog and had to inform Mom that I was totally sold out on the dog and she wouldn't be getting it back. (I later found them a wonderful dog named Dino which I'll talk about later in my blog).
What I didn't know is this great dog would change my life and his name still lives on today in the business world.
Everyone made fun of my new named dog I mean Goober is a a weird name but not one you'd forget. I should also mention the rest of his family. Sampson , Paradise, and Harley
Sampson was a lab I had gotten from the pound. He was active and very loyal. Black as tar and a Nutro Max coat that glistened in the sun. He was a very pretty dog. His only little problem was he hated I mean hated cats. I guess one them pissed him off at the pound and believe you me that dog never forgot about it.
Paradise was my first wife's dog a Toy Poodle that pissed and barked all the time. That dog thought it was 100 pound mean fighting dog. That was until Goober came around.
Harley came a little later he was a big red doberman that I had found in Scottsdale. Very well breed and great personality to boot. Him and Goober became very close and admired each other. Harley was a great watch dog and was a great show dog. We talk later about that.
So that is the family that I started with when Goober was introduced to my life. I was married at the time but nothing worth mentioning.
